The size of the district's bench is set by statute as well: the Fourth Judicial District has three district judges under NRS 3.014 . Under NRS 3.100, district courts hold court at the county seat of each of their counties — for Elko County, court is held at the county seat, Elko.
With three district judges, Elko County has the largest district-court bench in Nevada outside the Reno and Las Vegas districts. The name "Elko" does triple duty locally: it is the county, the county seat where the Fourth Judicial District Court sits, and one of the several townships that have their own justice courts.
District court
The district court is Nevada's main trial court — the level that handles felonies, family matters, probate, and larger civil cases. The Fourth Judicial District Court serves Elko County, whose county seat is Elko.
Justice courts
Justice courts are township-level courts that handle smaller civil claims, small claims, evictions, and misdemeanors. Elko County townships are served by several justice courts, including the Elko, Carlin, Wells, and Eastline township justice courts.
Township boundaries decide which justice court hears a matter. The Nevada Judiciary's statewide justice court directory lists every justice court, with addresses and phone numbers.
