Which judicial district serves Esmeralda County
Under NRS 3.010, Nevada is divided into 11 judicial districts, and Esmeralda County belongs to the Fifth Judicial District. The same district also covers Nye County . For how the districts fit together statewide, see our map of Nevada's judicial districts.
The size of the district's bench is set by statute as well: the Fifth Judicial District has two district judges under NRS 3.015 . Under NRS 3.100, district courts hold court at the county seat of each of their counties — for Esmeralda County, court is held at the county seat, Goldfield ; the same judges also hold court in Tonopah for Nye County matters .
Esmeralda County shares its two-judge judicial district with neighboring Nye County, with court held in Goldfield — Esmeralda's county seat — for Esmeralda matters and in Tonopah for Nye matters. Older directories sometimes describe this district as also including Mineral County; under the current statute the district consists of Esmeralda and Nye only.
District court
The district court is Nevada's main trial court — the level that handles felonies, family matters, probate, and larger civil cases. The Fifth Judicial District Court serves Esmeralda County, whose county seat is Goldfield.
Justice court
Justice courts are township-level courts that handle smaller civil claims, small claims, evictions, and misdemeanors. Esmeralda County is served by the Esmeralda Township Justice Court in Goldfield.
